Life Lately:
I sound like a broken record, but my migraines are kicking my butt again.  I had another ocular migraine this week.  So frustrating!  I was out with my mom trying to help her get some last minute shopping done for her wedding next weekend and it hit me.  She's never witnessed me with one before, so she was nervous because after a while I lose almost all of my vision.  I had never even heard of an ocular migraine until I had one a couple years ago.  For some that may not have heard of it, it start as a small spot in your vision; kind of like right after a camera flashes in your eyes.  Then it get bigger, and the only way I can describe it is like if you were looking through a prism.  There is a big sparkly, squiggly line in the middle of your vision that has bright colors around the edges.  As it grows, I lose my peripheral vision.  It can last up to 40 minutes.  The first time I had one I rushed to the hospital because I was worried I had a brain aneurysm or a tumor or something.  It was scary.  I don't get them too often but they usually precede a king sized migraine.

On to my bookish news,  I have been doing really good with not requesting a ton of books lately....although I did just break down and join Edelweiss, so I'm not sure how long that's going to last. lol!  I'm not used to Edelweiss at all.  I've been getting most of my ARCs from NetGalley.  I feel like it's an easier website, but maybe that's just because I'm used to it?  I'm also kicking my Reading Challenges' butts so far!  I've read 18 books already this year (my Goodreads goal is 200 books) so I am a little ahead of schedule.  I've read 5 books towards my Beat the Backlist challenge(Goal=50) and 12 towards my New Release Challenge (Goal=125).  Woohoo!  Hope I can keep it up!

I probably won't be around for next week's Stacking the Shelves link up because my mom is getting married!!  Yayyy!  So I hope you all have a great couple weeks and can't wait to check in again!

  1. I've heard other bloggers say that Edelweiss isn't as easy to use as Netgalley so it's not just you! Those migraines you get sound really scary as well as painful. I've never had one and I certainly never want one. Well done on your current book challenges and congratulations to your mum!

    1. So glad I'm not the only one that think Edelweiss is a little tough to understand. lol! And yeah, I've had about 6 ocular migraines total and they still scare me every time they happen. We were in the middle of a store when this one hit. I'm glad I wasn't alone because it's always scary trying to maneuver around when you can't see well. And thanks so much! I'm happy for her. She still hasn't gotten to the nervous stage yet. She keeps saying it doesn't feel real yet. lol

  2. So sorry about the migraines. That sounds awful. NG is so much easier than EW but I still ike them both. Greta job on your reading so far!! Have a great week!

    1. The migraines have definitely been frustrating. I really wish there was a magic cure, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to work that way. Maybe as I get used to Edelweiss it will get easier. lol! I'm not good with change. Thanks, and I hope you have a great week too!

    1. Thanks so much! It's so hard not to request every single book that I want. haha! I have no self control. The migraines are really horrible, but it helps me appreciate the good days more, I guess. Hope you have a great week!

  5. Edelweiss is not so bad once you get used to it! I like NetGalley more because it has more features, but Edelweiss is much more informational. Like, NetGalley doesn't have past and future catalogs - just LISTINGS. I like having the catalogs to look through!

Whaaaaat, no freebies? Girl, let me fix that! Sourcebooks Casablanca has Thrill Ride (Walker) on sale for free. I haven't read it, but it's free!

I hope you enjoy your new books! Have a fabulous weekend, Julie. =)

    Check out my STS post!

    1. haha yeah, I've been trying not to get too many freebies until I read more from my TBR list because I had around 420 books on my Kindle waiting for me already. lol! I have a feeling I am going to go nuts on freebies and requests soon tho because I've been so good this month.

I'm going to play around a little more on Edelweiss. I like I just have to get used to their setup maybe..? I've been using NetGalley for a few years now so, I've got that one pretty figured out. haha! It's hard too because since I've been on NetGalley a while I've been pre-approved by a few publishers so on Edelweiss its kind of like starting over... Ehh I dunno. Who knows how much I'm actually going to use it. lol

Thanks so much! Hope you have a great weekend too!

    1. The cover is the first thing that got me really excited about the book. Then then synopsis hooked me. lol! Hope it's good, it sounds like it will be!

  7. I'm really curious about Queens of Geek! I'll probably get that one. And Cold Summer has such an amazing cover. Yay for the reading challenges- it's always nice to get a good start on those. And sorry to hear about the ocular migraine- that sounds awful.

    1. Thanks, I'm feeling much better today. It was a 2 day migraine and I ended up having to sleep it off. Yuck. I'm super excited about Queens of Geek. It sounds like it's going to be really good. I love both Queens of Geek and Cold Summer's covers.

  8. Those migraines sound really scary, Julie! Do the doctors think they know what can trigger them?
Your new books look fantastic! I love the cover for Cold Summer :) So beautiful.
Edelweiss is not as easy to use as NetGalley in my opinion, too. However, I do like using it, as I'm pre-approved by some publishers there. That makes it very dangerous to visit the site, though, as I can directly download books without having to request them first.
Congratulations to your mom! I hope you'll both have a great time at her wedding next weekend.

    1. The migraines can be really scary. I have a couple migraine triggers like: poor sleep, not eating enough small meals/snacks, hormone levels, things like that. But most of mine come out of no where. I've tried keeping a journal about everything I ate, how I slept, exercise, etc. and haven't really found anything that stands out. I've gotten them since I was a teenager but they've been bad for the past 4 years. At one point I had them every day for over a year.

I really love the cover for Cold Summer too. It's the first thing that drew me to the book, and then the synopsis hooked me. lol. I've been on NetGalley for a couple years and I've been pre-approved for a couple publishers there so I almost feel like I'm starting all over at Edelweiss. I dunno..we'll see how it goes. lol

And thank you! The wedding is coming up fast and we're all getting excited.

  9. Julie I can't imagine how that ocular migraine must have been for you, I can't deal with a normal migraine, so I'm definitely sending positive thoughts your way. I also do find it easier to request on Netgalley then Edelweiss, but Edelweiss has so many great books up! I hope you have a lovely week! :)

    1. Thanks so much! Ocular migraines are more scary than anything...the migraine that comes right after is really horrible though and can last for days. I think I'll probably always like NetGalley better but it's just because I don't like change haha!

Hope you are having a great week too!

    1. Thanks so much! Chronic migraine is the worst. I think I have more migraine days than good days lately. It's really frustrating.

Thanks so much for stopping by, and I hope you have a great week.

  11. I am not a fan of Edelweiss. Its so much more confusing to use compared to NetGalley. And I never get approved on Edelweiss!! Its too tough on my fragile ego!
Sorry about your headaches. That sounds terrible and scary! Hopefully you can find a treatment.

    1. haha Yeah, I know what you mean. I requested a couple books on Edelweiss and was denied all of them. LOL! The only one I've gotten from there so far was Cold Summer...and that's only because it was an instant download. lol.

  12. I find Edelweiss rather confusing as well. I request there from time to time, but not as much as I want just because I hate the process. Sorry about the ocular migraine. I get them from time to time as well but since I went off one of my medications, they seem to be less frequent. Except now I get cluster headaches which I find as bad. Great job reading so far - January was terrible for me. However, I did finish 5, almost 6 so I guess I can't complain too much.

    1. I'm not sure if I'm going to become an Edelweiss fan or not. I may just stick to NetGalley. It's so much easier to navigate and request books. Glad you haven't been getting as many ocular migraines, but sorry that you now get cluster headaches. I've had a few of those as well and they are horrible. And hey, as long as you are able to get a couple books in then you aren't doing too bad at all!

Hope you have a great week!

  13. I'm so sorry about your migraine... how are you holding up today? Did the migraine pain come to fruition? My husband get ocular migraines but nothing the size you get :( Hang in there...

Edelweiss used to be hard on my ego, too, like Samantha says. It still is when I have to ask for approval for books. Publishers take FOREVER to approve books. But unfortunately, pubs will white list you more often on Edelweiss than on NetGalley. That's why most of my books are from Edelweiss *shoulder shrug*. My suggestion... get a job at a library :) That helped me a lot!!!

    Have a great reading week!!

    1. I've been having a really hard time with the migraines lately. It's really been getting me down, if I'm being honest. I've been having more migraine days than good days and it's really frustrating. Sometimes they can last multiple days before they go away. Then it seems like I only get a day reprieve before I'm right back into another one.

I requested a couple books on Edelweiss and got declined for them all. haha! The only book I've gotten from them so far is Cold Summer and that's only because it was an instant download. lol I am actually really tempted to try to get in at the library in my small town. I think it would be a great fit for me. I may try Edelweiss again here and there but I will probably stick with NetGalley for the most part. lol!

Hope you are having a great week!

    1. I wish there was a magic treatment for preventing the migraines, but for now it doesn't seem like that's possible. It's really frustrating. Especially when I have a little one to try to keep up with.

I definitely prefer NetGalley as well. It just seems much easier to use. I may give Edelweiss another try here and there but I'll probably just stick with what I know.

Hope you have a great week!

  15. Oh Julie! I'm so sorry about these headaches - they sound absolutely awful and headaches can be such a horrid thing to suffer from. I also get frequent headaches but only occasional migraines and I don't know how you're managing to function!

How is your little one doing? Is she feeling better now?

I don't mind the layout of Edelweiss but I've not been successful through there at all... I haven't tried in a while though and my blog is pretty new, so maybe I'll have more luck if I give it another go. I do like how NetGalley have publisher requirements though and unfortunately Edelweiss you're flying blind! I hope you feel comfortable on there soon.

Congrats to your mom and I can't wait to hear about the wedding!

    Have a lovely week!

    1. Hey! Living with chronic migraine is definitely not easy. I get down about it a lot because I feel like I have to give up a lot to be able to deal with them. It's really hard making plans and things. I'm lucky to have a very supportive husband to help me thru. He's my rock. =)

Our daughter is doing much better now. Thanks so much for asking. Now my husband has the cold. We keep passing it back and forth, I think. Can't wait until it starts warming up again. lol

So far I have been declined by everything I requested on Edelweiss. lol! I've only gotten one book so far and that was because it was an instant download.

Thanks so much! Only a couple more days until her wedding. She has been surprisingly calm so far. I'm still waiting for the last minute freak outs. haha

Hope you have a great week too! Always nice to hear from you!
