In this new contemporary from YA star Kasie West, a girl who wins the lottery learns that money can cause more problems than it solves, especially when love comes into the picture.

Maddie doesn't believe in luck. She's all about hard work and planning ahead. But one night, on a whim, she buys a lottery ticket. And then, to her astonishment --

She wins!

In a flash, Maddie's life is unrecognizable. No more stressing about college scholarships. Suddenly, she's talking about renting a yacht. And being in the spotlight at school is fun... until rumors start flying, and random people ask her for loans. Now, Maddie isn't sure who she can trust.

Except for Seth Nguyen, her funny, charming coworker at the local zoo. Seth doesn't seem aware of Maddie's big news. And, for some reason, she doesn't want to tell him. But what will happen if he learns her secret?

With tons of humor and heart, Kasie West delivers a million-dollar tale of winning, losing, and falling in love.

I can FINALLY say that I've read a Kasie West book! lol!  I have been wanting to check out one of her books for a really long time so I jumped at the chance to review this one.  I haven't read any books with an MC that won the lottery so this was a fun new idea for me.  The cover for this one is absolutely adorable and it screams summer to me.

Maddie is very intelligent and spends most of her time focusing on studying and keeping her grades up in school so she can get enough scholarships to pay for college. After having a pretty bad 18th birthday, she decides to get a lottery ticket.  She doesn't think much more on it because she knows the odds that she will win are minuscule, so she's ecstatic when she finds out that she won! She thinks the money is going to solve a lot of her problems, like: being able to afford college, helping her brother also afford college, and she hopes it will also solve her parent's money troubles and they will stop fighting. She doesn't expect everyone to suddenly know who she is and want something from her.  Even the people closest to her seem to be treating her differently.  The only one that doesn't seem to be treating her differently is her crush from the zoo, Seth.

I really liked how realistic it was that people seemed to come out of the woodwork to want something from Maddie.  That's how I would imagine it being if someone won the lottery.  All of a sudden everyone wants to be your best friend and needs money.  I'm a lot like Maddie in the way that I wouldn't want any of that attention.  It's also hard to tell who your true friends are and who is just using you.  I think all of that was done really well.  There is an instance when someone close to her talks to reporters about her spending habits, and we aren't sure who has done it.  I didn't end up guessing who it was and it never came across as obvious to me.

One of the biggest issues I had with this one was the quick change in Maddie's character.  She was a very money-conscious, intelligent person, that was all about planning for her future.  She starts off right, saying she is going to use the money towards college, but it seems like as soon as the popular girl started coming around she just started throwing money around left and right.  It quickly got me angry.  It was such a drastic change in her behavior, especially when she's judging her brother for his spending!  I think I understand where the author was going with this (trying to show how money can change people, and how easy it is to get carried away) but it was so out of character that it just ended up frustrating me.  I also thought that Maddie's parents would have a thing or two to say about Maddie's spending habits, but nothing was really said and I would have liked to see something there.

I enjoyed the romance but I do have to admit that I wanted a little bit more from them.  I feel like it took a really long time to get anything started and then when it finally did start, there was drama, and then it was quickly wrapped up at the very end.  I really enjoyed Seth's character a lot but I wanted to see them interact a little more.  He was really sweet and it was really obvious (to me, at least) that he really liked her.

  1. Yes I was so surprised with how she was with her spending of the money. She seemed too smart for that. You need to read more Kasie though!! Love her books. Great review!

    1. I agree! The whole beginning of the book was about how intelligent she was, and then she turned around and started blowing money like crazy on stupid stuff that she didn't even really care about. It seemed like way too big of a change to me. I am definitely going to be reading more from Kasie West tho. I own P.S. I Like You and The Fill-In Boyfriend...I just need to work them into my schedule. lol Thanks, Grace!

  2. You'll have to try Kasie's The Distance Between Us! It's a really cute summer read! This one sounds really good, and I agree about the cover - it screams summer. I also like the lottery aspect. If feel like there's so many ways that can go, but that's too bad about the drastic change in her character. Awesome review!

    1. I will keep my eye out for that one, thanks! I own The Fill-In Boyfriend and P.S. I Like You but haven't gotten around to reading them yet. I hope to soon tho. The dramatic change in her character just really bugged me. Thanks, Lauren!

  3. I keep saying I'm going to read a Kasie West but I haven't. I've seen so many lovely reviews and feel like if I'm going to do contemporary (which I normally don't) something like this would be perfect. A little lighthearted and fun. Not my normal 400-500+page fantasy read...

I know this wasn't perfect for you but 3.5 stars is still a good read! If I see this one around I'm going to pick it up. :)

    Great review!

    1. haha this was finally my very first one. I own two of her other books tho, so hopefully I can knock more off of that list soon. I love mixing shorter reads in with my longer titles too. It helps break things up a bit

I hope you enjoy this one if you get to pick it up. I didn't completely dislike this one. I think I just went in with really high hopes.

      Thanks, Di!

  4. I liked this one better than some of her recent books too, though I'm a little sad because her new books just aren't as good as her older books. :/ I struggled a bit with Maddie too. I found her to be so stressful with how she was handling the money. And I'm with you on the romance! I totally wanted more of Seth because he was so great!
Glad you enjoyed it overall, despite some issues, Julie! :)

    1. I own a couple of her older ones, and I'm really excited to give those a try soon. Maddie REALLY stressed me out with the spending. She was throwing money around left and right on really stupid things that she didn't even care about. I definitely wanted more Seth. He was so sweet! Thanks, Nick!

  5. Noooo I kinda hate drama with romances. I know it's to be expected but can't it just be easy for once? :P

    1. haha I know what you mean! I'm not a big fan of drama or angst either. The drama in the relationship doesn't last long, so that's good. I wish it could just be easy sometimes too! lol

  6. Great review! I've been a bit wary about this one and you do a good job of justifying why I am a little wary but the fact that you enjoyed the romance in it does make me think that I might buy if it goes on offer. I have found West's older books were just that touch more fun for me, though.

    1. There wasn't really too much drama in the relationship...but there wasn't much about their relationship to begin with. It was just frustrating because it seemed like when things just started getting started, the drama came instantly, and that's what frustrated me about it. Thank you!

  8. I adore West's books and I can't wait to read it, but the romance often takes second place to the rest of the plot.

  9. I've not read a lotto one either or Kasie West though a few of her earlier books are on my wish list. I'd be irritated by the big character change even if it made sense, too.

Glad you mostly enjoyed your first Kasie West. :)

    1. It just seemed like too big of a change for me and it took a bit of my enjoyment of it away. I definitely want to try another Kasie West book soon tho. I own two of her other books and I can't wait to give them a try.

      Thanks, Sophia Rose!
