Love Story by Lauren Layne - 2 and a half stars

Average Rating: 3.5

Looks like I went romance crazy in February!  I do read more romance than I do anything else so I'm not too surprised.  And February is the month of love, right?! lol!  One of my personal reading goals for this year was to mix it up a bit and add a few other genres in there, so I've got some fantasy and YA scheduled for next month....along with more romance.  Seriously guys, I can't get enough of it! lol

I also posted a lot of giveaways, excerpt, trailer and cover reveals, and sales blitzes.  I will probably continue posting those types of things next month too because who doesn't love a giveaway?!

The two spend a whirlwind summer together that ends on the knife-point of heartbreak and forces them to go their separate ways.
Years later, when fate leads them back to one another, they will discover the terrifying depth of the secrets they kept from each other, and learn that shattered hearts can only be healed by a love that willfully refuses to die.

EXCERPT:
“Hey!”
She heard his voice before she saw him.
Had she known the ultimate cost of that simple glance heavenward, maybe she wouldn’t have stopped. Maybe she would have just kept on walking with her head down. But fate held no warnings for Laire Maiden Cornish.
Shielding her eyes, she looked up at a deck wrapped around the second floor of the mansion, waiting a moment for her eyes to adjust as he came into view.
There, in the glittering sunlight . . . a boy.
No, a man.
A young man, a little older than she, tall and muscular, with jet-black hair and a square jaw, dark brown eyes, and a deep tan. He wore a robin’s-egg blue bathing suit with Kelly green palm fronds in a small repeat and a pair of sunglasses buried in his thick hair. In one hand, he held a phone up to his ear, and in the other, he slowly swirled a glass filled with ice and clear liquid. He stared out at the sound, concentrating on his call.
“Hey!” he yelled. “Can you hear me now?” He huffed with annoyance, pulling the phone away from his ear and squinting at it before trying again. “Pete? It’s Erik. Can you hear me?” He set the glass down on the balcony’s wooden railing and gave his phone his full attention. Staring down at it, he muttered, “Shit. No reception.”
It’s Erik.
Erik.
His name is Erik.
Feeling a sharp burn in her lungs, Laire realized she’d been holding her breath and sucked in a huge gulp of air as she stared up at him, frozen in the moment, utterly mesmerized.
She had never seen a more perfect, more handsome person in her entire life.
The sun glinted off his dark hair and wrapped his body in gold, making him appear godlike so very far above her. Were she the type to swoon, Laire imagined she would have been a puddle of goopy longing on the ground below him, content to sacrifice her pride for a glimpse at his beauty.

It’s time for the sole sister in the family to discover love.

CRAVE ME
O'Brien Family #3
Cecy Robson
Releasing Feb 28, 2017

RT Book Reviews proclaims that the O’Brien Family series from award-winning author Cecy Robson “has the hottest brothers ever!” And in Crave Me, it’s time for the sole sister in the family to discover love.

Wren O’Brien isn’t your typical female. As the only girl from a loud Irish family with seven siblings, she prefers fast cars to lip gloss and bad boys to good men. It’s the reason she’s nursing a wounded soul and keeping her distance from a dangerous ex.

Evan Jonah is running an empire and just moved from the lavish thoroughfares of London to the gritty streets of Philadelphia. When he walks into the nearest dealership, he’s expecting to find a reliable vehicle to handle the brutal winters, not a sexy female car rep with killer legs.

Wren doesn’t know why “Hotness in a Suit” asked her out. She doesn’t expect a great time or a night of passion that knocks her on her ass. But that’s exactly what Evan shows her.

She also never counted on how hard and fast she’d fall. But men like Evan—good men with even better hearts—don’t desire tough-talking Philly girls for long.

Evan has never met a woman like Wren. But he’s up for the challenge and ready to prove her wrong.

Excerpt
Again she crosses her legs. Again there are my eyes upon her. She raises her smooth dark eyebrows when she sees me watching her. “You like what you see?”
“Yes,” I respond, my voice lowering.
Her hand smooths across the counsel. “They come in cream and tan.”
“What?” I ask, jerking my focus between her and the road.
“The interior,” she says, tilting her chin. She laughs as my face heats. “What did you think I was talking about?”
I pretend to adjust the mirror before I end up on some “list”. “I thought you were discussing the vehicle in general.”
“No, you didn’t,” she says. She pauses as my body temperature rises several degrees. “Were you looking at my legs?”
“No.”
“Yeah, you were. You were totally checking me out.”

Cecy Robson is an award-winning author of magical realms and to-die-for Alpha heroes. A double RITA® 2016 finalist for Once Pure and Once Kissed, and published author of more than sixteen titles, you can typically find her on her laptop or stumbling blindly in search of caffeine.

What does one do with a matchmaking cat named Romeo?

SPRINKLED WITH LOVE
Bachelor Bake-Off #3
Jennifer Faye
Released Feb 21, 2017
Tule Publishing

What does one do with a matchmaking cat named Romeo?

Spirited and beautiful, Jillian Parker is one of Marietta’s newest business owners. Still, her mother worries about Jillian’s bare ring finger. So in order to give her mother something else to fuss over, Jillian adopts a cat named Romeo. He turns out to be anything but a docile lap cat.

One snowy night, Romeo makes a break for it. With Jillian right on his heels, they have a near miss with a passing pickup driven by Avery Wainwright, one of Jillian’s closest friends. A rodeo accident has the sexy cowboy returning home to recuperate, and he’s not happy about it.

So when Avery finds himself lassoed into the Bachelor Bake-Off, he turns to the one person who has always helped him out—Jillian. But will teaching him to take chances outside of the show ring have them both discovering that their feelings for each other run much deeper than they ever imagined?

Excerpt:
They climbed in the sleigh and then Avery covered Jillian with a heavy lap blanket. “Are you ready?”

She nodded, clutching the thermos. “I am now.”

And then they were off, gliding over the snow. The snow muffled the sounds. And though the moon was hidden behind the clouds, it was still bright out. As they made their way through the field, Avery glanced over at Jillian. She was nestled beneath the plaid blanket and still clutching the thermos. She looked stunning. He should have brought her out here a long time ago.

“What are you smiling about?”

Jillian’s voice drew him from his thoughts. “Who’s smiling?”

“You are and you know it. So what’s up?”

“Nothing. I’m just enjoying the evening.” It was so much more than that, but he really didn’t want to risk ruining this moment. He’d worked so hard to pull it together. He wanted to savor their time together.

For a while they glided along in silence. He had a particular destination in mind. It didn’t have a name. It was just a spot where you could see for miles. And at night, it was like visiting a planetarium with all of the stars twinkling overhead.

“Are you warm enough?” he asked.

She nodded from inside her big, fuzzy hood. “I’m perfect. This is amazing. Do you take the sleigh out very often?”

He shook his head. “This is my first time. I usually come out here on horseback.” He slowed the horse to a stop before turning to Jillian. “I wanted to do something special for you. A way to thank you. You’ve always been there for me and my family, whether it was helping me with the Bake-Off or being the best nanny in the whole world.”

“You…you really think that?”

He’d obviously done a lousy job of communicating his thoughts in the past. He would have to do better going forward.

“I’m sorry I didn’t make that clear before.” He stared into her eyes. “I really appreciate everything you’ve done for me and my family.”

His gaze dipped to her lips. They were shiny and full. And he was overwhelmed with the desire to kiss her again. So what was holding him back?

They were all alone on this snowy evening. And as he’d come to discover while he was planning this evening, it was a very romantic setting. If he were ever to have a chance with her, it would start beneath the starlit sky. But should he risk it? Should he put himself out there again?

It wasn’t like he was asking her to marry him. It was a kiss—a simple, no-strings-attached kiss. It was a starting point.

He rested his arm over the back of the sleigh. His heart started to pound hard in his chest. He’d kissed a number of girls over the years on the rodeo circuit and he’d never put this much thought into it. But none of them had meant as much to him as Jillian. He leaned toward her.

Suddenly Jillian raised the thermos between them. “Hot chocolate?”

He settled back in his seat. Had he read the signs wrong? Was he that rusty where women were concerned?

Review: Love Story by Lauren Layne

Friday, February 24, 2017

Title: Love Story
Author: Lauren Layne
Series: Love Unexpectedly, #3
Genre: M/F Romance
Publisher: Loveswept
Publication Date: February 14th 2017

Over the course of one wild road trip, feuding childhood sweethearts get a second chance at love in this charming rom-com—a standalone novel from the USA Today bestselling author of Blurred Lines and Good Girl.

When Lucy Hawkins receives a job offer in San Francisco, she can’t wait to spread her wings and leave her small Virginia hometown behind. Her close-knit family supports her as best they can, by handing over the keys to a station wagon that’s seen better days. The catch? The cross-country trip comes with a traveling companion: her older brother’s best friend, aka the guy who took Lucy’s virginity hours before breaking her heart.

After spending the past four years and every last dime caring for his sick father, Reece Sullivan will do just about anything to break free of the painful memories—even if it means a two-week road trip with the one girl who’s ever made it past his carefully guarded exterior. But after long days of bickering in the car turn into steamy nights in secluded motel rooms, Reece learns that, when it comes to Lucy, their story is far from over. And this time, they just might have a shot at a happy ending.

As soon as I saw this one listed I knew I wanted to read it. I almost always love everything from Lauren Layne. Love Story is the third book in the "Love Unexpectedly" series, but can be read as a standalone. I read the first book in the series, Blurred Lines, and they don't seem to be connected at all. Blurred Lines is my all time favorite read from Lauren Layne so I was excited to read something from the same series. Unfortunately, I did not end up loving it as much as I had hoped.

Second chance romances are typically one of my favorite kind of romances, along with friends to lovers stories. This one happens to be both, so I figured I would love it. Unfortunately, I really disliked Reece. Like, REALLY didn't like him. He was always angry and said some really horrible, unforgivable things to Lucy.

Somehow Lucy, still has feelings for him after everything and lets him in her heart (and pants) again. Only for him to continue treating her horribly. Don't get me wrong I love grumpy heroes, but only when they have redeeming qualities, which he really didn't. I get that he didn't have the easiest childhood, losing his mom early, his dad checking out on him, and his sister leaving him but it didn't make sense for him to treat her the way he did. He basically forced her away from him when they were young and then throws a hissy fit when she tries to move on.

By the end of the story I wanted to see a huge groveling scene from him for me to even want them to be together a little bit, but was again disappointed. I ended up feeling like she forgave him too much and way too easily. I was more frustrated than anything by the end of this one. This just wasn't a winner for me at all, but don't let my opinion sway you. You may enjoy it more than me.

*I received an ARC of this title in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. *
