Life Lately:
Hello again everyone!  I missed last week's weekend linkups because I was on a little weekend getaway to the beach and my family reunion.  We had a really great time at the beach.  The weather said it was supposed to rain the whole weekend but the weather held out long enough for us to have a really nice beach day.  Our 4 year old daughter loved playing in the sand, and even got adventurous in the water.  My husband got BURNT! lol.  I thought he had sun poisoning at first because he started saying he didn't feel good at all and was really nauseous.  I forced him to drink a ton of water and kept some aloe vera on him and he was okay.

We also had an open house for our daughter's preschool this week.  I think it finally hit me that we have an almost school-aged kiddo on our hands. lol!  I was feeling a little overwhelmed after the open house, if I'm being honest.  I guess her preschool wants parents to be really involved so they ask parents to volunteer for planning/decorating the holiday parties(Halloween, Christmas, Valentine's, and Easter), tracing/cutting out crafts, and they have "family days" planned that are basically field trips.  They, of course have a Christmas show and an Easter show too, along with 2 parent/teacher conferences.  They also want parents to bring in a snack for the whole class once a month and buy some things for the classroom (disinfectant wipes, hand soap, etc.).  I don't really mind but I wasn't expecting all of that. lol  Whew!

The books I got for review are actually the past two weeks, since I missed last week.  I went a full month without requesting so I let myself get a couple.  I'm still going to try to keep from requesting to many ARCs because I am determined to knock some of these books off of my backlist.  I've read a few backlist titles for this month already.  I've actually got my posts scheduled about 2 weeks in advance so that's pretty nice.  I don't have to worry too much right now about falling behind with that, and it gives me more time to read!

    1. Thanks so much! Yeah, I was a little surprised by how much the preschool wanted us involved. I was anxious about it when I got home but I think a lot of that was me still trying to wrap my head around the fact that my daughter is in preschool. lol! The trip was really nice. I'm so glad we got some sunshine. Hope you have a great week too!

  2. Some schools over here are asking parents to fund all the classroom equipment, even pens and journals to write in. A lot of city parents just can't afford it after paying for school uniforms and shoes. I'm so glad I don't have any kids!

    1. Yeah, the elementary schools around here send out a list of things they want parents to send in with their child at the beginning of school. It's a huge list filled with glue, pencils, etc to be used by the whole class. Kids are definitely expensive! lol!!

    1. Thanks so much! It was nice to enjoy some sunshine for a while. I own a bunch of the books in the series with Whiskey Kisses but haven't read any of them yet. I'm horrible. lol! Glad you were able to pick it up for free too. Hope you have a great week too!

  4. Glad the weather was in your favor. I like the 3:am books. I have read 8 of them. Some are better than others, but they were all satisfying, and I really liked the couple in this one. I love road trip books and can't wait to read your post.

    1. I own a lot of the books in the 3am series but I haven't gotten around to reading any of them yet. lol! I'm horrible with letting the freebies stack up. I'm glad that you seem to have enjoyed them for the most part. Hope you have a great week!

  5. A beach getaway is the perfect thing to do! I am longing to do the same, even though I had a beach weekend (for a wedding) on April 1.

Preschools that require so much parental involvement annoy me...LOL. They obviously don't believe any of the parents actually work.

For my eldest (umpteen years ago), I was a SAHM and placed him in a cooperative preschool...which was a lot of work, but fun. And I had more time then.

Enjoy your books, and I'm curious about Suspicious Behavior...and here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES

    1. I LOVE the beach. I wish we could have spent a little more time there but I am happy with the time we did get, and that the rain stayed away for us long enough to enjoy it.

Yeah, I wasn't really expecting them to want us to be so involved. We'll see how it goes, I guess. lol I'm a SAHM right now, but I was kind of looking forward to a tiny bit of "me" time. That sounds horrible but sometimes it's nice to get things done with having to lug the little one around with me.

      Thanks so much!

  6. Wow, schools have gotten crazy! I don't remember my parents having to do any of that stuff, providing snacks for everyone or buying supplies. We just had to get our own stuff. I'm all for being involved with your kid's school, but wow!

    1. I don't remember my mom doing things like this either but I guess times are changing. lol! I think I remember one year she donated a box of tissues but that was it. We'll see how it goes, I guess.

  7. I bought Permanent Ink and Making It today. I don't really need more books to read lol but I haven't been requesting anything and read several of my existing TBR pile so I still consider it a win.

  8. Glad you enjoyed your family time at the beach :) Preschool, was so long ago for my children, I'm sure your daughter will love it. I mentioned to my husband today that I'm so happy I are children are no longer in school, I don't miss volunteering or buying school supplies. Enjoy your reads this week :)

    1. I'm already missing the beach. lol! We did have a lot of fun though. I'm sure my daughter is going to really love preschool, because she is definitely the social type...and loves to learn. I think I was just envisioning some "me" time where I could get things done around the house without little feet following. haha! Thanks so much! Hope you have a great week, and happy reading!

  9. Yay, I'm glad the vacation went well! Too bad for your husband though. Hopefully your daughter has fun in school!

Nicely done with the books, you're doing great! I might check out that freebie. I hope you enjoy all of your new books!

Have a wonderful weekend, Julie. =)

    1. Thanks so much! We had a really nice time, but we did figure out how difficult it can be to travel with a 4 year old. lol! I'm already missing beach time tho. I'm sure Paige is going to have a great time in school. She loves learning and being around other kids. I just hope she can understand that it's not all playtime. lol

I own so many books the 3am series (with Whiskey Kisses) but I haven't read any of them yet. I'm horrible! lol! I picked them all up for free at one time or another.

Hope you have a great week too, Alyssa! Happy reading!

  10. Wow-that is a lot of involvement in preschool. I'm sure it will be great though. Glad your husband is okay. Sun burns and sun poisoning is no joke!
    Enjoy your new books!

    1. haha yeah, I thought so too. But I know my daughter is going to absolutely love it. She loves being around other kids (she's an only child) and learning new things. She's like a little sponge soaking in information. I love it.

My husband is doing okay. I was really concerned when he was feeling so dizzy and nauseous. Luckily I think the water and aloe helped.

Thanks so much! Hope you have a great week, and enjoy your new books!

  11. I can't tell you how many times I have been overwhelmed by what was expected of me...school, girl scouts, marching band. It can be a lot but it is usually worth it in the end. I am sorry your husband got burnt at the beach so bad. I am glad he is better and your family had fun. Have a great week!

    1. My daughter is SO excited for preschool. I'm excited to have her spending more time with other kids since she's an only child. I think I'm started to feel a little less anxious about the involvement but we'll just have to see how it goes, I guess. lol

My husband and daughter are both very fair skinned and seem to get burnt very easily. We make sure to put lotion on our daughter, but he's so stubborn about it sometimes. lol Men!! Hope you have a great week too!

  12. Your beach getaway sounds very nice! I'm glad your husband was OK after lots of water and some TLC from you helped by aloe vera :)
Yeah, it's always a lot to take in when our first child starts school. I'm sure you'll be OK once you figure it all out.
Have a wonderful week ahead and happy reading.

    1. Thanks so much! He seemed to be feeling much better by the next morning but I think the sun took a lot out of him. I'm glad I put that aloe vera on him too. It seems to have stopped him from peeling too!
I think once I fall into a rhythym I will be okay with the preschool stuff. I just get anxious about change, I think. lol

Hope you have a great week, and happy reading!

  13. Yeah I remember all that- it was an adjustment with all the volunteering/ party stuff in elementary. I kinda don't miss it lol.

Glad you had a great beach/ family reunion. And yay for being ahead! Have a super week!

  15. I really liked Permanent Ink- I think you did too, if I'm remembering your Goodreads review?

Anyway, I'm glad you had a nice beach vacation/family reunion.

That's crazy about your daughter's preschool! I mean, it's cool they want parents involved - and I'm sure it's helpful - but so many parents work. I don't know how many of them could help much, beyond donating things.

    1. I did end up enjoying Permanent Ink for the most part. I thought the one character was really immature and frustrating at times, but I was happy to see his character grow up a little as the story went on.

Yeah, I'm a stay at home mom and I still don't have all that much time to volunteer for things. I volunteered as a craft helper but I couldn't do party planning. That would probably make me really anxious. lol!

Thanks, Lauren! Hope you have a great week, and happy reading!

  17. oh I know, it can be so hard to not request ARC's. In fact, I don't think I am at the point where I could do that hehe So bravo for your self control. I do however, try to limit how much I request, so that I can still read books from my shelves.

    1. It's so hard not to request all of the books that I really want. lol! I've really been trying tho! I really want to read more books that I already own. Thanks so much!

  18. Sounds like a good break for you guys and you enjoyed your time away. I normally end up being the one getting sunburn when at the beach. I accept this as part of being pale. And it's a scary when you realise how fast kids are growing but at least you get to get involved.

I want to start reading more off of my own shelves. I'm attempting to develop some kind of reading plan.

    1. It was really great getting away for a while, and I already miss the beach. haha! I don't usually burn too much. I'll get a little pink on the tops of my shoulders and my nose but that's about it. By the next day it usually turns into a tan. lol! I'm lucky

I've been pretty good with my reading plan this month but I have already read 4 extra that weren't originally on my list. lol It's so hard to say no to new books
